Sony just had their most recent fiscal earnings call, and one of the much talked about devices was our favorite portable gaming system, the PS Vita.

During the report, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai announced that the Vita has sold 1.8 million units worldwide thus far. Hirai confirmed that it's a good start but reaffirmed what we all already knew, "We have to reinforce our software". Hirai also confirmed that the Vita is a key part of Sony's strategy going forward and that plans have not changed in spite of the console's somewhat disappointing early sales numbers. Sony is not going to abandon the Vita.

While 1.8 million sales is not poor, hopefully the added focus on software will bring a good deal more in.

of coarse they need to pay more attention to software .. and i hope what they mean by that is .. bringing better games to the vita and actually giving us psone ava. ... what sony needs to do is listen to it's customers and maybe there sales would look tons better

this is what happens when you get greedy... people recognize and fail to want it ... rather then pleasing the consumer and always have a loyal fan base plus more

if they stop worrying about sales so much and worry about what the demand is then maybe they wouldn't have to worry at all ... DERFF haha

1.8million isn't a bad start. Although I wish it was more like 3-4 million, it's definitely enough to ease my mind a little. Not that I was that worried about it. I believe the Vita has a bright future ahead for it. Now with that said, Sony, don't turn me into a liar.

Yeah, everything is in place for the Vita to be outstanding, even with all my gripes about the Wifi version. But there's nothing more disheartening than going into a major retail chain and seeing the same handful of games, plus a few more. Before I realized, I was looking at PS3 games, thinking "When did THAT come out for the--Oh, wait, the selection ends back here." :/

I was ready to drop $100 for my Vita today, but left empty and wanting because there's just nothing there that would make someone drop money for a game, let alone $250-300 for the system itself. But, with the line-up of games on the horizon, I can't help but be excited. I just wish I didn't have to wait so long to fully enjoy the Vita.

I really expect much more to come of this. $250+ system should be able to do whatever the heck you want.

It may be a good start but that doesn't take away that it's being outsold by the 3DS every single month.

Why would anyone want to play Super Mario Rehash 29 or The Legend of Zelda 94 on a system that's four times as weak as the PS Vita?

The 3DS definitely had its slump. And it wasn't until the price drop AND more release titles did it gain ground again. The moral of this story, kids, is that a system without titles won't sell. Period.

Street Fighter x Tekken is one of the main reasons I bought my Vita. And with the other consoles releasing right before the Vita dropped, I figured the Vita version wouldn't be too far off. here, 3 months later and no SFxT.

the 3ds really only came to life when resident evil - revelations came on it ...and due to price drop ... so in my opinion... that's sad , call me old fashioned but 3d tech. is over hyped and will fade away .... yes it's a decent piece of tech. (t.v. , movies , video games ) but lets face it ... in the long run .. we want the basic controls and 2d visuals with 3d graphics ... as much as we love the touch screen features .. i still love the controller controls .. but yeah ... 3d visuals is retarded ... like i said earlier before ... and pat. sooner or later .. they will have games much more high in graphics and game play ... making games ranging from like 16-32 gig's in memory which will be ps3 quality if not BETTER then ps3 graphics .... lets just hope sony gets their heads out of their dirty little assholes lol

If you looked at sales figure, RE did little to stem the slump the 3DS was going through. In fact, I believe their sales figure was respectable-not great but not bad either. It really wasn't until Mario 3D Land, that the device really took off. I think RE helped with people on the fence and hardcore RE fans.

As for 3D being overhyped. You couldn't be more wrong. 3D gaming is here to stay and it will only get more popular as TVs become more 3D-centric. Sony has already dabbled in 3D gaming with some of their FPS games. There was an article way back in which they discussed that graphics will eventually reach a state in which it will make very little difference in the quality of a game. Many games (outside of Nintendo) used to rely on great grpahics to carry it but eventually, it will require other gimmicks/innovations to continue its success. Many see 3D as that next step.

I bet you that PSP Next will have 3D capabilities. It's kind of funny that Sony's handheld is trailing Nintendo's in terms of innovative use of technology whereas Nintendo trails in terms of graphics and coprocessor power. The Vita is following the DS with touchscreen capability. If you think the 3D in the 3DS is too gimmicky, I raise you that the back touchscreen of the Vita is way more gimmicky and at least for now, not successful.

I think it is the demographics that the two are aiming for. The Vita has the double whammy of being the rich man's, hardcore gamer's device. The buy in cost for the Vita is way more than the buy in cost of the 3DS and that's not even taking the main device into consideration. Add to that, the fact that the pool of hardcore gamers is much much smaller than the pool of casual gamers as hinted by the DS and proven by Apple.

The other thing is the device itself. It's still very early to judge the software built into the Vita but many find it disappointing after the intial wow factor has set in. There is very little to use the Vita for outside of gaming on the cartridge. The 3DS, on the other hand, has come a long way to fulfilling its promise of being more of a social gaming device. It has incentives for being carried around and interacting with other 3DS owners. Sony's Near is a far cry from Nintendo's Streetpass/Spotpass even though the Near is technologically more impressive (and the bigger downer is that you have to have the 3G to enjoy its full feature).

Success of Nintendo's 1st party games did boggle my mind at first but was put to rest when I played Mario 3D Land and later Mario Kart 7. I am far from being a Mario fan. I don't particularly care for Nintendo's 1st party games but there is something in their line of games that I find very appealing. For Mario 3D Land, it was intially the visual feast (the 3D is done to near perfection in terms of using it towards gameplay over just eye candy) but quickly changed to the ingenious level designs. Mario Kart 7 gave me the best online experience ever on a handheld so far. I would have passed on these 1st party games if it wasn't for ther drought (of games) and the overwhelmingly crappy 3rd party games that came before RE. Like you, it did boggle my mind but after having played these 2 and having played some oldies (due to the Ambassador program), I understand somewhat the appeal of these 1st party line of games.

oninowon .. you should work for nintendo ... believe me as much as i can respect what you say .. it's not the software that is disappointing to consumers ... it's the lack of what their doing to fix it ... the software is amazing and will soon dominate the portable world ...it's only a matter of time .. the facts of the spec's are far more impressive then the 3ds by a long shot .. i've read many articles and did the research. the problem with the vita is.....time . it's only been out for only a few months .. yes it's a tad blah but as far as i remember ... people looked at the 3ds as over priced gameboy ... it was doing terrible ... and in my eyes i have yet to see something jump out at me ... but that;s just me .. i am more of a hardcore gamer .. i like my more adlult games with multiplayer ... blood and gore with serious story lines ... which mario and other nintendo titles don't ness. have.
i give this gaming console about 6 months to a year to blow people out of their vacation homes.
it may seem like i sound like some sony fan boy but in all honesty .. i used to be a hardcore nintendo gamer .. and after their lack of awesomeness i really try and find some light in their industry and have yet to find something that wow's me ... but like i said that's just me
but all in all the vita is a much more advanced piece of hardcore ... and i still think it will outshine even the wii U ... but once again that's just my opinion ... there are a lot more hardcore gamers then you think trust me ... of coarse there are more casual games out there ... majority of the people using nintendo products are families and little kids .. or people like me who play the system drunk with some chick to get the silly freakie dicky moment moving along lol .... so that's a obvious ... but of coarse you aren't going to see aunt stacey playing call of duty screaming "i'm gonna rape your babies" after dying 5 times. in my eyes just cause one sells just for casual games, doesn't mean it makes it a over all better product. shrugs
